Top 7 signs of a ‘Good’ Boss
(not necessarily in this order)
Recent research produced by the Chartered Management Institute and Penna along with Henley Business School, says that only approximately 57% of managers consider their line managers to be effective.
So, we thought we’d produce our own short list of what we think constitutes the top 7 signs of a ‘good’ boss.
See if you agree?
You encourage employees in your team to do well - You see employees in your team doing a job well and you tell them so.
The employee is likely to repeat that behaviour and you are building on the skills that you want to encourage.
You’re not afraid to reward - You know that rewards are not just monetary and that a simple ‘thank you’ for a job well done will work wonders. Some organisations promote an ‘employee of the month/week/day’ and although you may think it sounds trivial, the competitive spirit amongst work colleagues in this way can inspire others to be the best next month/week/day.
You listen - It is well documented that bad bosses rarely listen. You, as a good boss, always do.
It’s the face-to-face contact that is important. Listening to an employee’s viewpoint (which you may or may not agree with) is investing in people as individuals and makes them feel valued. Meeting people’s emotional needs also encourages them to go the extra mile for you.
You are fair - You are a good boss and treat people fairly. You know the difference between treating people fairly and treating them equally. We are all different. We don’t all want the same things. What you want and what your employees want from their job are different too. You may wish to attend the annual conference in Switzerland. Someone else may want time off to go to their child’s summer sports day. You may want a different office chair. Someone else may want to do a marketing qualification. Treating people fairly is not about treating them equally.
Working for you can be fun - We’ve all heard the saying ‘work hard, play hard’ and you know that people come to work for all sorts of reasons, money is just one. Fun and humour increase employee’s ability to cope with stress and to remain creative and innovative under pressure.
People are not afraid to ask you for help - You know that everyone who makes a decision will make a mistake and that we learn from our mistakes. Your employees value the chance and are motivated by the trust you put in them to do their job well. The reality is that we all make mistakes and shouting at people will kill workplace productivity. If employee’s feel like they are constantly being reprimanded, they’ll avoid you if there’s ever a problem.
You garner respect - You lead and set a great example. Your vision is well communicated and you know how to get your employees to buy into that vision. You are a leader who respects and empowers each member of their workforce.
At the end of the day, YOUR success will be determined by your team.
